In yet another enjoyable and fruitful collaborative work with our Stanford partners, we could demonstrate purely optical control of electrons with the help of nanofabricated photonic structures. We demonstrate that we can accelerate electrons in not just one but two subsequent interaction regions, indicating that we can now add interaction regions to build a long accelerator. Furthermore, we show a lens for electrons with a parabolically shaped nanophotonic grating. Last, we show that we can accomodate for the electron speed increase by tapering the accelerating grating period. In essence, we have shown a number of important elements of a dielectric laser accelerator. The paper has been just published in Optica.
