Ankündigung des Promotionsvortrags von: Herrn Dominic Bernreuther

The detection and classification of fundamental structures of the interstellar medium (ISM) is tedious but tremendously important work for astronomers. Structures like supernova remnants (SNRs) shape and drive the ISM and have a big impact on evolving galaxies.

Those fundamental structures are of bubble-like shape. Finding these bubble-like structures is therefore crucial in the study of galaxy evolution and of the universe in general. Currently, the detection of those bubble-like structures is done mainly by eye, by manually examining astronomical images.

In the era of machine learning and deep learning algorithms, however, this process can be au-atomized. In this talk, I will present an automated detection and classification routine for bubble-like structures in astronomical images. This routine is called BScan.

I will also show the detection and classification performance of BScan on real data and give an outlook on how to improve BScan, such that it can be used as a standard tool in astronomy in the future.
